Description
Gem 1844 Dime, The "Orphan Annie" of the Seated Dime Series
1844 10C MS65 PCGS. Dime production at the Philadelphia Mint plummeted from 1.3 million pieces in 1843 to a mere 72,500 coins in 1844. Thanks to the efforts of Frank C. Ross, a writer from Kansas City, the latter issue has been dubbed "Little Orphan Annie," a nickname that has led to widespread hoarding of this issue among Seated Dime specialists. Most examples in collector's hands are, however, worn specimens that typically grade no finer than VF. The certified population of this issue dwindles rapidly above that level of preservation, with Mint State coins numbering just six coins at both NGC and PCGS (7/01).The present Gem is the single finest certified example of this popular and conditionally challenging P-mint issue. Both sides are silver-gray in appearance, the obverse being semi-prooflike in finish, the reverse displaying a warmly frosted texture. There are some striations (as struck) in the obverse field, neither side reveals any sizeable distractions. A coin that is earmarked for inclusion in the finest collection of 19th century Dimes.
From the Gulf Coast Collection.
