Description
The Second Finest Certified 1870-CC Half Dollar, AU 50 PCGS
1870-CC 50C AU 50 PCGS. WB-101. The first half dollar delivery from the fabled Carson City Mint, the 1870-CC is also the scarcest CC-mint half dollar in terms of total number of pieces known. A solid argument can also be made for the 1870-CC as the most conditionally challenging half dollar from the Nevada branch mint. The closest competitor would be the well known 1878-CC, but Wiley and Bugert (The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, 1993) have assigned a High R.5 rating to this issue in XF/AU and an R.7 rating at the Mint State level. The '70-CC, on the other hand, has an R.6 rating in XF/AU with a certified population of a mere seven coins in these grades (5/00). To date, this issue is unknown in Mint State. It is always an occasion of pride for us when we offer a high grade 1870-CC half dollar. A beautifully toned XF 45 PCGS specimen occupied lot 6287 in our Chicago 1999 ANA Sale. Part of the Nevada Collection of CC Silver, this important coin realized $10,350 and was, at that time, the finest '70-CC half dollar that we had ever handled. Of course, that distinction now passes to the present AU specimen. Both sides display a somewhat muted, slate-gray appearance, but brighter golden-tan shades are noted around the denticles. Although the surfaces are typically abraded for a circulated silver coin from the Carson City Mint, a small grease stain (as struck) between the two upper arrowheads on the reverse is the only readily evident pedigree marker. A coin of monumental significance, this example is one of only two AU survivors known to both NGC and PCGS (5/00).
