Description
Deeply Toned MS66 1807 Draped Bust, Heraldic Dime, One Of The Finest Known
1807 10C MS66 PCGS. JR-1, the only known dies, R.2. The reverse die for the 1807 dime had previously been used to strike four quarter eagle issues: the 1805, 1806/4, 1806/5, and 1807. Once it was converted to use for dimes dated 1807, well over 100,000 pieces were produced. As a result, most of the examples known today display multiple die problems, including weak definition on the left side of the obverse, die clashing in the right obverse field, repolishing, and missing peripheral details on late strikings. This particular coin shows softness on the left obverse stars, and close examination with a magnifier reveals die clashing on the right side of the obverse--minimal Mint-made problems for this issue. Post-striking impairments are virtually non-existent. The mint luster is thick and frosted, being strongly in evidence beneath the deep violet and blue toning that covers each side. An exquisite type coin and virtually unexcelled in technical grade (NGC has certified one piece finer). Population: 2 in 66, with none finer (3/04).(#4480)Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 4480, GSID# 3970)
