Description

1965 Quarter Struck on a 90% Silver Planchet

1965 25C Washington Quarter--Struck on a 90% Silver Planchet--AU50 PCGS. The PCGS holder allows the edge to be viewed, and no sign of a red copper core is evident. Both silver and clad coinage were struck at the same time in 1965, although the 90% silver planchets were supposed to be stamped solely on 1964-dated dies. This untoned and briefly circulated piece is problem-free and shows traces of its original luster. In the second half of 1960s, silver coins were hoarded from circulation by inspection of the edge; imagine the owner's surprise when this piece bore a 1965 date.
