Incredible MS65 1798/7 Dime--One of the Finest Examples Known
1798/97 10C 16 Stars on Reverse MS65 NGC. JR-1, R.3. After the criticism leveled at earlier designs, Robert Scot executed a reverse design for the dime that was above reproach, based on the Great Seal of the United States. Scot's reverse was slightly modified until the series ended in 1807, but in general it was popular enough with both the public and Mint officials that the same dies were often used to strike quarter eagles. The JR reference on the series raises an interesting question regarding this. If dime and quarter eagle dies were used interchangeably, why are there no common half dollar and ten dollar reverses? There are four reverses used for 1798 dimes, but the JR-1 is the only reverse that was not also used to produce quarter eagles, giving it a singular appeal and importance to collectors.The JR-1 variety has a distinctive overdate feature, a small 8 over a large 7. As such, the bottom of the downstroke of the 7 is readily apparent below the small 8. This is an intermediate die state that shows slight evidence of the near-horizontal die scratch across the obverse, clash marks, and the incused star in front of Liberty's throat. The reverse, however, is free from the clash marks seen on later die states. A bit softly struck in the centers, as typically seen on JR-1 dimes, the strike elsewhere is incredible with crisp definition on all the peripheral details. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces display thick mint frost and there are no noticeable abrasions on either side. A wonderful example of this first year of the Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle type.
