Description
Rare 1866 Motto Quarter, MS64
1866 25C Motto MS64 NGC. The introductory Motto issue, with 16,800 business strikes produced. Larry Briggs (1991) writes of this date: "Because of the early die damage, most business strike coins appear more worn than they really are. Only three fully struck business strike coins ever seen. This date is quite rare in all grades ... ." As expected, the centers and right side stars are not fully brought up by the dies on this MS64 specimen. The luster is satiny, and generally untoned surfaces display a couple of tiny splotches of russet color near the top of the obverse. Light roller marks are visible on the obverse portrait, and die polish lines occur in the fields.(Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23UB, PCGS# 5468, GSID# 5137)
