Description

Impressive 1799 S-189 Cent, VF25

1799 1C VF25 NGC. S-189, B-3, R.2. The number of 1799 large cents available at any one time in the marketplace is limited, while the number of collectors seeking those coins continues to expand. As a result, demand always seems to exceed supply, with each new collector driving prices to even higher levels. Every so often, a specimen appears that has remained off the market for many years or even decades. That is the case with this example, acquired many years ago as a VF for $200, according to the accompanying envelope. Based on price records in the Guide Book and its predecessor, the Standard Catalog, this piece was probably purchased sometime in the 1930s, or possibly the early 1940s.
Showing the sharpness of a strong VF coin, the obverse has smooth surfaces with a few tiny abrasions, but overall an attractive piece. The reverse has slightly less sharpness, with faint traces of corrosion and roughness. An outstanding example, this VF25 NGC piece is virtually the equal of the other similar piece in the present sale. EAC 12.
