Choice AU 1944 Steel Cent

1944 Steel Cent AU 55 NGC. We are pleased to offer one of the very rare and always-collectible off-metal strikings from 1944. This piece is accompanied by a deluxe Photo Proof, and to catalog this piece we can do no better than to reproduce the individual Photo Proof description that accompanies the coin: "Following the failure of the 1943 steel cents, thousands of zinc-coated planchets remained. Some were used to coin two-francs pieces for Belgium, while others were destroyed. A very few were mistakenly fed into presses coining Lincoln Cents. In his book on the series, David Lange reported that just 27 steel cents had been confirmed from the Philadelphia Mint. This attractive specimen is only the fourth such coin certified by NGC (7-97). Just lightly worn, it retains most of its mint luster. Both sides have toned to a mottled, steel gray, and the surfaces of this specimen are very clean for a steel cent."
