Description

Elusive 1807 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle MS63

1807 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Bass-3016, Breen-6124, R.3. Final year of the Capped Bust Right series and the date that is most often available to collectors for type purposes, its mintage being a design-high 6,812 pieces. Still, the 1807 is a difficult issue in any condition since most of original production succumbed to the mass meltings of the pre-1834 period. While the typical Mint State 1807 Quarter Eagle is hampered by numerous adjustment marks and/or poor peripheral detail, the Select representative offered here has neither of these detractions. The satiny olive-gold surfaces are consistently well struck and have tinges of reddish patina on the reverse. For pedigree purposes, we note a small, round mark to the left of the L in LIBERTY and a paper thin blemish below the left side of the scroll to the left base of the N in UNITED. An important early 19th century gold type coin in this outstanding grade. Population: 4 in 63, 2 finer (4/03).
