Description

Beautiful MS 63 1859-C Half Eagle--Second Finest Known

1859-C MS 63 PCGS. Ex: Elrod. A fabulous coin and formerly the representative piece in the William Miller Collection, where it was described as, "The 1859-C is extremely rare in strict Mint State with only five pieces currently known to exist. This is the second finest example known. This and the finest known both resided at one time in the collection of famed collector Stanley Elrod. The obverse on this piece shows the slight softness usually seen on the hair curls below BERT of LIBERTY, and the reverse is ill-defined, as always. The surfaces are remarkably clean for this normally heavily abraded issue. The only defects worthy of mention are numerous, small planchet flakes scattered over the reverse--mint-made problems being common to all 1859-C half eagles. Each side is semi-prooflike with evidence of heavy die striations in the fields."
Ex: William Miller Collection (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6296.
