Description

1856-D One-Dollar Gold, AU 58

1856-D AU 58 NGC. One of the major rarities in the gold dollar series, the '56-D has a low survival rate from an already tiny mintage of 1,460 pieces. Most known examples are in the XF-AU grade range and are often weakly struck in the centers. The bright yellow-gold surfaces on this near mint example are particularly well defined, showing only modest lack of detail in Liberty's hair. Much of the original luster is still in evidence and the only noticeable distraction, a minor one at that, is a diagonal hairline scratch on the reverse that is visible only under close scrutiny. The opportunity to own this small piece of rare Dahlonega gold does not often present itself. Population: 3 in AU 58, 1 higher (6/96).
