Description
High Grade 1866-S No Motto Twenty
1866-S No Motto AU 53 PCGS. The '66-S represents a transitional year between the Type One and Type Two designs, with the No Motto variety being by far the scarcer of the two. This is also an issue that is considered a high grade condition rarity, although it is still very scarce in lower grades, even VF and below. This piece has bright surfaces, and while not too well struck, the design elements are surrounded by light mint frost. Heavily abraded (as most were) with myriad contact marks on either side. This is the highest example thus far graded by PCGS (2/98), and one of the finest examples of this rare issue known to both services.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269W, PCGS# 8945, GSID# 9906)
