Description

Rare Draped Bust, Small Eagle 1796 15 Stars Half Dollar

1796 50C 15 Stars Re-Engraved, Damaged, NCS. O-101, R.5. Although NCS does not provide a details grade for this coin, it appears to have the definition of a Fine example, if the re-engraved details are not taken into account. Only four die marriages are known for the entire Draped Bust, Small Eagle type, each of which is Rarity-5 or Rarity-6. Two varieties are dated 1796, one with fifteen stars (O-101) and the other with sixteen stars (O-102). Type set collectors put enormous pricing pressure on survivors in all grades, with specimens also coveted by date and variety specialists. This piece has extensive tooling in Liberty's hair, which at least is accomplished with some skill. The fields are smoothed and hairlined and have an occasional wavy appearance. Retoned in lavender and aqua-marine colors. A die crack journeys through the last three stars and the bust truncation to the rim, as is usually seen on this desirable die marriage.(#6057)
