Radiant 1873 No Arrows Half, Unique PR66 Deep Cameo Grade

1873 50C No Arrows PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. One would be hard pressed to find survivors of this proof 1873 Half Dollar delivery that are more stunning than either the Kaufman specimen or the example in the present lot. Whereas the former coin is richly toned, the present example is most praiseworthy for the stark field-to-device contrast. Fully brought up with thick mint frost, the devices seem to float atop illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. There is very little toning, the pale golden highlights on both sides being largely confined to the borders. There are no bothersome post-production blemishes, but a trio of as struck features are noteworthy for pedigree purposes: an obverse lintmark connects the inner points of stars 1 and 2; a thin planchet flaw (possibly a faint grease stain?) is evident in the upper left obverse field; and a small lintmark is noticed in the reverse field below the eagle's left (facing) wing. The finest of only two proof 1873 No Arrows Halves to have received a Deep Cameo designation at NGC and PCGS (1/03). (#96431)
