Description
Moderately Prooflike 1796 Draped Bust Dime, MS 63 NGC
1796 10C MS 63 NGC. JR-1, R.3. The first-year 1796 was produced to the extent of only 22,135 pieces. The fact that five obverse and reverse dies were used to deliver this paltry number of coins does not speak well for the efficiency of the early Philadelphia Mint. The work of Robert Scot, the design of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle dime is similar to that of the 1796-1797 half dime, 1796 quarter, 1796-1797 half dollar, and 1795-1798 silver dollar. Approximately 40% of extant 1796 dimes are of the JR-1 variety, with perhaps as many as 20 coins in Mint State grades. A well preserved coin, the only mentionable surface disruption is the diagnostic cud on the obverse near star 1. Both the central devices and peripheral details are boldly impressed, and the rich dove-gray toning is suggestive of originality. Brighter multicolored undertones are also noted at certain angles. From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.
