Description

Very Rare 1870-CC Half Dollar, A Key in the Seated Half Series

1870-CC 50C AU50 PCGS. WB-101. Large Mintmark. An extreme rarity in the Seated Half series and a valuable coin in all grades. However, the '70-CC is seldom seen in XF and better condition. There are no Mint State pieces known to date (8/01), and only one coin has been certified finer than this piece, a PCGS AU55. This is apparently an early die state, and seldom seen as such, with complete drapery details, fully defined letters on LIBERTY, and sharp neck and leg feathers on the eagle. The surfaces are bright overall with a light overlay of golden patina on each side.
Ex: Philadelphia 2000 Sale (Heritage, 8/00), lot 6003, where it realized $18,400.
From the Tommy Dorathy Collection of Seated Halves.
