Description

Lovely and Rare PR66 1873 Arrows Seated Half, An Issue that is Always in Demand

1873 50C Arrows PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. The Philadelphia Mint delivered 500 examples of this first-year Arrows, Motto Seated Half Dollar with 1873 proof sets. If Harry X. Boosel's assertion that 550 proof 1873 Arrows Halves were struck is valid, then an additional 50 coins must have been delivered later in the year, and perhaps sold individually. The diagnostics of this important issue are:

1. Incomplete drapery at Liberty's right (facing) elbow from excessive die polishing.

2. Shield point minutely right of upright of the 1 in the date.

3. Left base of 1 in the date is almost centered over a denticle.

All proof 1873 Halves of the Arrows type were struck from the same reverse die that the Mint used to deliver the 1873 No Arrows proofs, and all of the former display an Open 3 in the date.
There is no doubt in our minds that this high end Gem is completely original. Warm copper-gray toning envelops both sides and lightens ever so slightly around the central obverse. Direct angles draw forth salmon-pink and electric-blue undertones on the reverse, as well as glassy reflectivity throughout the field areas. Neither the striking definition nor the surface preservation are worthy of even the slightest criticism. Combined NGC and PCGS population for the 1873 Arrows Half in PR66 is a mere five coins, and there are none finer (7/02).
