Description

Finest Graded 1839-O MS 64 Quarter Eagle

1839-O MS 64 NGC. Wide Fraction, Small Arrows. Ex: Dawson. One of the finest surviving examples of this popular issue, the only year a Classic quarter eagle was struck in the New Orleans facility. Most examples are in the XF to AU grade range and mint state pieces such as this one are quite rare. The striking details are strong in the centers with none of the characteristic weakness on the eagle, and the peripheral stars on the obverse are also well defined. A short die crack connects the detached olive leaves to the border at left, via the I in UNITED, with a small unfinished area, perhaps a planchet flake, just above. The surfaces exhibit characteristic green-gold color and are otherwise fully lustrous with a bright, satiny appearance. Population: 1 in 64, none finer (7/98).
