Description

Worthy AU53 1796 Dime

1796 10C AU53 NGC. JR-6, R.3. Luster beckons from the design when this pearl-gray and silver-blue Small Eagle dime is rotated beneath a light. Surprisingly unabraded aside from a hair-thin mark on the eagle's neck.
Nine die varieties of 1796 dimes are known, one of which (JR-7) is known only from a single low grade example. 1796 was the first year of dime production, and one of just two dates that bore a Small Eagle reverse. Its Heraldic Eagle successor is substantially more available, mostly due to comparatively high mintages for the 1805 and 1807.
