Description
Important 1838-C Quarter Eagle, MS62 NGC
1838-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Winter 1-A. The first Quarter Eagle issue from the Charlotte Mint, which had begun production that year. Only 7,880 pieces were struck, and Uncirculated survivors are infrequently encountered. The 1838-C is popular not only because of the obverse mintmark placement but also because it is one of only two C-Mint Quarter Eagle issues with the Classic design. The mintmark is widely recut north, and the lowest two arrowheads touch the final letters in AMERICA. Several stars are boldly repunched. The strike is good if not needle-sharp, and the surfaces are surprisingly free from mentionable abrasions. Extensive bright luster further aids the eye appeal. A faint die crack (as made) is noted above the eagle's left (facing) wing. Population: 5 in 62, 2 finer (7/03). (#7697)Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 7697, GSID# 8257)
