Description
Attractive 1796 16 Stars Half Dollar, O-102, VG8
Ex: Jules Reiver Collection
1796 50C 16 Stars VG8 NGC. Ex: Jules Reiver Collection.
O-102, High R.5. The usually seen die crack that travels from the
rim between the date and star 1 through the first four stars to the
milling at 8 o'clock shows clearly on this specimen. A later die
state is evidenced by an additional crack connecting stars 2 and 3
and by cracks from stars 1 and 2 to the edge. Both sides display pleasing natural gray toning, with the devices just a shade lighter. Liberty's ear and the hair strands beneath are relatively well defined, as are the curls behind the shoulder. Indeed, the obverse likely qualifies as full Fine. On the reverse, the eagle's right (facing) wing and the adjacent palm leaves in the middle of the wreath are weak, as is the bottom of the 2 in the fraction and the upper parts of F and AM. The design elements are nicely centered on the planchet, and about one-half of the dentilation shows on the obverse and roughly one-quarter on the reverse. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a coin that has seen moderate to heavy circulation, and reveal no mentionable blemishes or adjustment marks. A minute J-shaped mark on Liberty's temple identifies the coin.
This piece will make a welcome addition to an early U.S. type set or to a date/variety collection of Bust halves. Lower- to middle-grade Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollars usually lack the attractive, unimpaired surfaces seen on this lovely specimen.
