Description
Extraordinary 1798 Draped Bust, Large Eagle Dollar--MS 63 PCGS
1798 $1 Large Eagle MS 63 PCGS. B-27, BB-113. Die State II. In terms of overall availability, the B-27 is of medium rarity for the issue with perhaps 500-800 pieces extant. Bowers (1993) states that there are a surprising number of AU and Mint State representatives of this variety available to today's collectors. If this is true, then the majority of Mint State 1798 Large Eagle dollars must be of this variety since NGC and PCGS report only 27 examples in grades from MS 60 through MS 68 (7/00). This is a beautiful coin whose technical merits and eye appeal are a match for the 1799/8 MS 63 NGC specimen that we are also offering in this sale. Whereas the latter coin is richly toned, the present example is minimally patinated in golden-gray iridescence through which intense mint frost shines at all angles. The strike is sharp, although not full, but there are no areas of excessive lack of detail. This is a relatively clean coin for the grade, and an important bidding opportunity for the advanced early dollar specialist. From the Richard Allen Collection.
