Description
Flashy Prooflike MS66 1888 Half Dollar
1888 50C MS66 NGC. Only 12,001 business strikes were produced of this important half dollar from the low mintage decade of the 1880s. Few are known today in such well preserved condition as this piece. As with most of the halves from this decade the fields are glittering and prooflike. In the past less-than-expert collectors and dealers have experienced difficulty telling the difference between business strikes and proofs because of the highly reflective nature of the fields on the low production business strikes. This coin retains much of the original brilliance in the centers with scattered purple and cobalt-blue toning around the margins. Just a bit softly struck on Liberty's head and the upper stars on the obverse. Population: 9 in 66, 8 finer (3/05).(#6370) (Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24L3, PCGS# 6370, GSID# 6308)
