Description
Rare 1846 Select Proof Seated Half Dollar
1846 50C Medium Date PR63 NGC. Any proof coinage prior to 1858 is considered rare in any condition. Simply put, proofs were not produced for general sale to collectors until that date, and earlier proofs are few and far between as they were produced basically for guests of the mint and visiting dignitaries. Poor, if any, mintage figures were reported during the early years. This specimen exhibits definite characteristics of a proof: nicely mirrored surfaces, bold striking details with full definition of the stars, Liberty's head, the shield, and the peripheral denticles. Each side is deeply toned a golden-argent color from years of careful storage. A thin, almost invisible scratch is seen laterally across the obverse resulting in the PR63 grade, but this is only visible under close examination. This is a "must see" lot for the collector of early proof coinage. Population: 4 in 63, 2 finer (3/05).(#6390)
