Description

One of the Finest Certified 1874-CC Trade Dollars, MS 65 NGC

1874-CC T$1 MS 65 NGC. Writing in 1993, Bowers opined that the 1874-CC is one of the rarest Trade dollars in Mint State. The Nevada branch mint produced 1.3 million of these coins, most of them in December, but few were kept stateside. Most examples were shipped to the Orient, where they remained in commercial channels until well into the 1940s. Bowers further stated that he had never seen a full Gem 1874-CC Trade dollar, and he concluded: "...I am not sure that one exists at this level." In the intervening seven years, however, the NGC Census Report has expanded to include four MS 65 examples. These coins are not matched by any similarly graded coin(s) at PCGS, nor are they surpassed at either service (7/00). The present example displays radiant, frosty luster that thins to near-reflectivity in the fields. The surfaces are not distraction-free, but the number of small abrasions is far fewer than one would expect for a CC-mint Trade dollar. Typically impressed over the focal features with whispers of golden and tan iridescence scattered about.
