Description

Important Mint State 1838-C Quarter Eagle

1838-C MS 62 NGC. The first of the C-mint quarter eagle issues and an immensely popular issue from a small mintage of just 7,880 coins. The obverse mintmark is double punched on all 1838-Cs, first being entered low enough to touch the top of the 3 in the date. Both sides of this lustrous green-gold example are tinted in rich reddish hues, creating a nice mixture of these original colorations. The central striking details are firmly impressed in all areas and come up short only on the peripheral stars. Survivors of this elusive issue are most often seen with at least 15 points of wear, with Fine and Very Fine pieces not out of the ordinary. Only a handful of 1838-C quarter eagles are around today at the mint state level, this lovely, original example no doubt ranking solidly in the Condition Census lineup. Population: 3 in 62, 2 finer (10/97).
