Description

Borderline Uncirculated 1860-D Gold Dollar

1860-D G$1 AU 58 PCGS. Very close to full Mint State with just a touch of friction noted on the high spots. Both sides are lustrous and show deep, even orange-gold color. The strike is a bit below average with the UN in UNITED very weak and some corresponding weakness on the left reverse border. A tiny mint-made planchet fissure to the right of the U in UNITED serves as identification.
The rarity of this issue has been greatly overstated in the past. Despite its tiny original mintage of 1,566 pieces, there are an estimated 80-90 survivors, with approximately two dozen in About Uncirculated. Uncirculated 1860-D gold dollars are very rare, with a mere half dozen or so examples known.
From the Chestatee Collection.
