Description
Superb Condition Census MS 62 1839-D
1839-D $2 1/2 MS 62 PCGS. Not as well struck as the MS 61 just offered, with some weakness noted at the centers. A superb, original coin with lovely, deep, orange-gold color over very frosty surfaces. There are virtually no marks noted even below magnification. A small coppery toning spot on the obverse rim at 10 o'clock serves as identification. There are approximately ten to twelve Uncirculated 1839-D quarter eagles known. The presently offered example is, according to our records, the fourth finest of these and it is the only piece in this level of quality that is likely to be available for some time.
Variety 1-B; bold branch stem located entirely to the left of the D in UNITED. All three of the reverse die cracks as described on page 90 of Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint are present, but they are faint.
The current Condition Census for this issue is as follows:
1. Private collection, Ex: Stack's 10/94: 859; James Stack Collection. Graded MS 64 by both PCGS and NGC.
2. Duke's Creek Collection, Ex: Superior 2/98: 3334. Graded MS 63 by PCGS.
