Description
Condition Census 1858-C Quarter Eagle in MS62
1858-C $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. The 1858-C is the most common C-mint Quarter Eagle produced in the 1850s, and it is the most easily obtainable C-mint Quarter Eagle of any decade after the 1839-C, 1843-C Large Date, 1847-C, and 1848-C. This is not to say that the '58-C is common in an absolute sense, as the Charlotte Mint recorded an original delivery of just 9,056 pieces. The high level of preservation makes the present example even rarer, as Winter reports a Mint State population of only 6-8 coins. Prior to the consignment of this coin, we had handled only three similarly graded '58-C Quarter Eagles, all of which qualify for Condition Census standing:1. Ex: January 1999 FUN Signature Sale--North Georgia Collection, lot 7771, where it realized $19,550. This was a PCGS-certified example.
2. Ex: March 1999 Sacramento ANA National Money Sale, lot 6605, where it realized $13,225. This coin was graded by NGC at the time of the sale.
3. Ex: August 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale, lot 7869, where it realized $10,350. The coin was certified by PCGS.
The coin that we are offering here is impressively sharp with full star centrils and hair curls on the obverse and only the slightest softness of detail on the eagle's right leg feathers on the reverse. The luster is vibrant, being modestly semi-prooflike in finish with fields that shine through orange-gold patina. There is some porosity in the planchet on the reverse around the eagle's portrait, but distracting abrasions are at an absolute minimum for the MS62 grade level. Really a nice coin, and a premier condition rarity in the U.S. gold series.
