Description

Important 1844-D Half Eagle in MS 64

1844-D $5 MS 64 PCGS. The third and final 1844-D half eagle in this collection. This piece has glittering, semi-prooflike luster beneath light green-gold color. The strike is very sharp with the exception of the obverse border from 3 to 6 o'clock which shows some minor weakness. One has to look long and hard to find any disturbances in the fields. The overall appearance of this coin is very impressive, to say the least.
There are an estimated ten to twelve 1844-D half eagles known in Mint State. The Chestatee Collection contains three of these, or between 25 and 30 percent of the known population.
Remarkably, there is an 1844-D half eagle that is considered finer than this example by specialists. The Pittman I: 970 coin (that sold for $52,250 by David Akers in his October 1997 auction and is now in the Duke's Creek collection) has been graded MS 63, but it is considered by many to be at least a point finer than this.
The rarity of Dahlonega half eagles in MS 64 and MS 65 can best be expressed by looking at the current (June 1999) PCGS Population Report. Including this 1844-D, there have been a total of seven pieces for all 26 issues in this series graded in MS 64. In MS 65, there have been only three examples certified. All of the MS 65 coins are in the incomparable Duke's Creek Collection and will be unavailable in the immediate future. Nearly every MS 64 is off the market in strong hands as well. Who knows how long it will be before another PCGS MS 64 Dahlonega half eagle is made available to collectors?
From the Chestatee Collection; earlier owned by Mike Brownlee.
