Description
1845-D Half Eagle in MS 63
1845-D $5 MS 63 PCGS. Well struck and very frosty with the bright green-gold coloration frequently seen on this issue. There is a thin mint-made impurity in the planchet that starts at the rim above star 3 and travels to the throat of Liberty. This is faint and does not readily detract from the overall appearance of this coin. Another impressive, high grade Dahlonega half eagle that should appeal to date and type collectors alike. The 1845-D is very similar to the 1844-D in terms of its availability. There are approximately seven to nine 1845-D half eagles known in Uncirculated including at least three that grade MS 63 or better.
According to our records, this is the third finest known 1845-D half eagle. It is exceeded only by the gem in the Harry Bass collection (Ex: Norweb I: 817) and the very choice PCGS MS 63 in the Duke's Creek Collection (Ex: Eliasberg: 437).
From the Chestatee Collection; Ex: Stack's/RARCOA/Akers sale of October 1995, lot 1459, where it brought $15,400; Ex: Milas Collection sale (Stack's, 5/95), lot 459, where it realized $22,500.
