Description

Exceedingly Rare 1930-S Twenty, MS63 PCGS

1930-S $20 MS63 PCGS. An exceedingly rare Saint-Gaudens issue that was extensively melted after a production run of just 74,000 pieces. Unlike other 1929-1932 issues, the supply of 1930-S twenties has not increased appreciably over the past few decades, leaving perhaps fewer than 60 coins extant today in all grades. Of the five collectible dates at the end of the Saint-Gaudens series, the '30-S is clearly the most difficult, and in Mint State the '30-S ranks from fourth to sixth, depending on the survey, of the 54 issues in the series. Only the legendary 1927-D is significantly more elusive as an Uncirculated coin. The surfaces are frosty with a thin coating of opaque color that is most discernible as the coin is turned under a light. There are very few abrasions on either side, and a diagnostic die scratch (as produced) is noted in the right obverse field, and there are several small, raised lumps within the last digit in the date.
