Description

1787 1C Fugio Cent, UNITED STATES, Cinquefoils AU58 PCGS. Newman 11-B, R.4. A bold and unabraded medium brown Fugio Cent with little if any wear from circulation, although each side has a slender mint-made planchet flaw. Struck slightly off center toward 9 o'clock, affecting only the left-side denticles. Struck from boldly clashed dies. Listed on page 63 of the 2004 Guide Book. Previously as lot 2036 in the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries catalog of The Roy Harte Collection, sold on November 17, 1977, and described in that sale as "1787 Fugio cent. United at left, States at right. Choice Brown Uncirculated. A couple die striae on reverse. Extremely well struck for this issue. All legends clear. The Fugios were the first semi-official coins struck for our fledgling government. Traces of mint red in the protected areas give an added bonus."
