Very Rare 1912 Gem Matte Proof Twenty Dollar Coin

1912 $20 PR65 NGC. Only 74 proof twenties were struck in 1912, and this date is roughly comparable in rarity to the 1911 and the other dates of the series (except for the 1908 which is the most "common"). Earlier estimates of the number of survivors have ranged between 10-15 pieces to as many as 20-25 specimens. Like the 1911, we believe that the actual number of proofs in all grades to be somewhere between 25 and 35 coins.
The fine matte surfaces sparkle with myriad tiny granular facets and the coin, overall, has a pleasant olive-gold color. Only 74 proof twenties were struck in 1912, and this date is roughly comparable in rarity to the 1911 and the other dates of the series (except for the 1908 which is the most "common"). Earlier estimates of the number of survivors have ranged between 10-15 pieces to as many as 20-25 specimens. Like the 1911, we believe that the actual number of proofs in all grades to be somewhere between 25 and 35 coins.
The finish of this piece is also similar to the PCGS Proof 67 1911 above. It differs, however, by showing an even mustard coloration over both sides, but is more monochromatic and lacks the overlay of pale lilac seen on the 1911 (except on the left side of the reverse where there is an irregular splash of that color). Again, magnification shows myriad tiny sparkling facets from the sandblast surfaces. This sparkle gives the coin a "life" and sheen that serves as a perfect counterbalance to the otherwise deep coloration on the piece.
The surfaces are not perfect, however, however they are certainly presentable for the assigned Gem grade. There are small (almost microscopic) contact marks evident in the fields on each side and a couple of shiny spots show on the upper torso of Liberty and also her knee. Also, as a future identifier, a tiny black spot is seen just above the capitol's dome. These are all trifling objections, though, and do not disrupt the overall impression of Gem quality that this coin projects. They do, however, serve as an explanation for the grade and inform the viewer why the coin "only" grades Proof 65.
