Description

Extremely Rare 1870-CC Eagle

1870-CC XF 40. The '70-CC ten-dollar, while minted in greater numbers than six other CC eagles, boasts the lowest total number and average grade of survivors from the popular Nevada mint. As such, it is among the most famous and difficult of all Carson City gold issues. Rarely offered at auction, we are proud to offer two examples in this sale, particularly one of this grade. To date (11/97), neither grading service has certified an AU. PCGS has grade just 6 XF 40 pieces and 2 higher, both grading XF 45. This piece has seen circulation, displaying the expected light wear and myriad tiny contact marks. It is, nonetheless, an honest and attractive coin that will will please even the most critical observer.
