Reflective 1795 B-14, BB-51 Dollar, MS62

1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center MS62 NGC. B-14, BB-51, R.2. Late in the year, the Philadelphia Mint introduced the Draped Bust obverse design on the silver dollars. The same design appeared on the smaller silver denominations, the half dime, dime, quarter, and half dollar, in 1796. A numismatic tradition states that Gilbert Stuart, the famous portrait painter, prepared the initial artistry for the new design, using Ann Willing Bingham as his model. Dave Bowers notes that John Eckstein of Providence, Rhode Island was paid $30 for the production of two models for silver dollars on September 9, 1795. Bowers further suggests that the two models may have been prepared for Robert Scot from the drawings by Stuart. If that is so, then Eckstein deserves considerable credit in the creation of the Draped Bust design used on our late 18th and early 19th century coinage.
A sensational example of Gilbert Stuart's artistry, this lovely Uncentered Bust example is one of two die varieties known for the 1795 Draped Bust silver dollars. The other variety has a centered bust obverse that has no peripheral design elements touching any part of the central motif. Both sides have excellent central and peripheral design details. The surfaces are brilliant silvery-gray with few blemishes other than some light obverse adjustment marks that are of little consequence. The fields are reflective and a few faint hairlines limit the grade.(Registry values: P3)
