Description

Highly Regarded Gem 1844 Dime
'Little Orphan Annie'

1844 10C MS65 PCGS. Deep ocean-blue patina bathes this sharply defined and gently shimmering Gem. The fame of the 1844 dime begins with its enticingly low mintage of 72,500 pieces. The tiny production led Frank C. Ross to hoard examples and promote the issue as the "Little Orphan Annie" variety. Various implausible scenarios were generated to explain the rarity of the 1844 dime, such as pirate seizures of ships and the like. While nothing so dramatic likely occurred, examples may have been melted after the 1848 discovery of gold in California, an event that removed most silver from circulation until the silver content in new coinage was reduced in 1853.
