Description

1851 Humbert Fifty-Dollar, 880 Thous. AU 55 PCGS. K-5, Low R.5. The bright surfaces and traces of mint luster indicate that this piece was carefully preserved over the decades, unlike most other "slugs" which were melted because of their high intrinsic value. Granted, there are numerous abrasions scattered about, but only a few marks deserve individual mention. The most apparent flaw is a scratch through the H of THOUS on the scroll. A tiny planchet flaw is also noted at 3'clock on the inner beaded circle of the obverse. The rims show a few small ticks, but no large knocks, as often seen on these heavy coins. Well struck on the obverse, but showing slight softness on the engine turned reverse. A significant coin and the first of this variety that we have offered in several years. Listed on page 270 of the 1995 Guide Book.
