Description

Radiant 1873 Arrows Half, PR66 Cameo NGC

1873 50C Arrows PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. The Philadelphia Mint's Half Dollar issues of 1873-1874 have long been coveted by both circulated and Mint State type collectors. The proofs are even more desirable and, as such, fetch higher prices than their business strike counterparts. This is easily one of, if not the finest representative of the 1873 Arrows proof delivery. The surfaces display a bold cameo contrast between the glassy fields and the richly frosted devices. There is some faint cloudiness around the peripheries, but the centers are untoned and flashy. Marred only by a couple of short staple scratches around the lower left reverse rim. Population: 4 in 66 Cameo, with none finer (4/02).
Ex: William M. Friesner Collection (Edward Frossard, June 16-17, 1894); J. M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/97), lot 2024, where it realized $17,600.
