Description

Superb Quality Rolled Edge Ten--MS 66--From The New York Collection

1907 Rolled Edge MS 66 PCGS. The highly elusive "hybrid" of the later reworked No Periods variety of this first-year ten Indian. Originally intended for circulation, almost all of the 31,550 pieces minted were immediately melted when the design was once again modified, removing the periods before and after the wording on the reverse. Just 42 pieces allegedly survived, with most of those of choice quality. The Rolled Edge ten is an even greater rarity than the 1907 Wire Rim despite is much higher original mintage.
This is obviously one of the finest pieces known, and it is certainly the finest we can remember having handled in the past seven or so years. The rich orange-gold surfaces have a thick, satin-like texture and there are numerous, faint die polishing marks in the fields which lend even more brightness to the appearance of this important coin. There are several small specks of verdigris on each side that serve to identify this important piece: On the obverse a small carbon spot is located at the bottom of the zero in the date; while on the reverse, there is an obvious spot of grease (as struck) on the eagle's beak and another, smaller one next to the left (facing) leg. Population: 10 in 66, only 1 finer (10/98).
