Description

Lustrous 1857-C Gold Dollar AU50

1857-C G$1 AU50 PCGS. Variety 10-L. This issue is known both for poor planchets and poorer striking quality. This example shows some planchet roughness and irregular dentilation from 4 to 6 o'clock on the obverse, as often found. The central strike is weak on the reverse, with the O in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date only partially visible. Ample luster remains, however, and there is not that much actual wear on the coin. A couple of curious short scrapes have deeper, ball-shaped indentations at one end, in front of Liberty's face. The surfaces are a pretty medium gold. Population: 22 in 50, 34 finer (5/06).(Registry values: N2998)
