Description

Intensely Lustrous 1838 Reeded Edge Half, MS 66 Quality

1838 50C MS 66 NGC. There are several components that go into making up the grade of any given coin. Strike, luster, surface preservation, toning. And on any given coin there is one element that immediately captures the viewer's attention more than any other. On this remarkable piece it is the luster. Bright, thick, and frosted, it is almost easy to overlook the fullness of strike and remarkably clean surfaces that also go into the makeup of the grade of this extraordinary type coin. Brilliant throughout except for a few almost imperceptible flecks of color that can be seen around stars 7, 8, and 9. A dazzling, near-perfectly preserved example of this short-lived type. Population: 4 in 66, only 1 finer (3/01).
