Description

Sharp Gem 1862 Gold Dollar

1862 G$1 MS65 NGC. Mint personnel had a devil of a time striking up the Type Two one dollar gold pieces properly, resulting in the redesigned Type Three pieces after a short regime for the flawed design. Such a Type Three coin as this splendid Gem assures us that the Mint finally got it right. The strike is bold, with no trace of weakness on the date (the most common plague on Type Two coins), nor on the headdress feathers or the highpoint hair. The reverse wreath is equally crisp. The surfaces are a pretty orange-gold, with abundant luster and no distractions worthy of mention--including an absence of clash marks. Census: 94 in 65, 56 finer (5/06).(Registry values: N2998)
