Description

Historic and Rare 1860-D Gold Dollar AU58

1860-D G$1 AU58 NGC. The 1860-D Gold Dollar is a challenging issue for a variety of reasons. First, the Dahlonega Mint produced only 1,566 example of the denomination this year, the majority of which have failed to survive. Second, the 80-90 examples that are extant are apt to grade no higher than XF 45, a reality that makes the '60-D a conditionally rare issue. Finally, the typical 1860-D gold dollar is a poorly struck, heavily abraded coin that offers limited eye appeal for the collector and considerable difficulty for the professional grader. The expected bluntness of strike is most noticeable on the obverse and there are several small depressions on the portrait that are also Mint-caused. While moderately abraded, the reverse is generally well struck save for a few areas of localized softness. An important Gold Dollar for the specialist in Southern gold. Population: 21 in 58, 9 finer (11/04).(#7556) (Registry values: N4719)
