Description

PR67 Deep Cameo 1898 Quarter Eagle, A Colorful and Pristine Survivor of an Overlooked Rarity

1898 $2 1/2 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. From an original mintage of just 165 coins comes this unsung rarity in the proof Liberty Quarter Eagle series. Approximately 55 specimen strikings of the 1898 Two-and-a-Half are believed extant. While a few truly amazing examples have been recorded at NGC and PCGS (PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS, PR68 Deep Cameo NGC, PR69 Deep Cameo NGC), both services have also seen a not insignificant number of impaired examples, as well as the usual percentage of average quality coins. The point here is that, although theoretically available in the finest grades, the proof 1898 is not at all common at such lofty levels of preservation with the typically offered specimen grading no finer than PR65. This is truly a wonder coin with rich, cascading mint frost over fully struck devices. Glassy, pristine fields form a splendid backdrop to the major design elements, and every area of the surface is distraction-free. Interestingly colored, the reddish-gold obverse is mated with a golden-rose reverse. This is the first Deep Cameo-designated proof 1898 Quarter Eagle at any grade level to appear in a major auction. NGC and PCGS Population: 4 in 67, 4 finer (10/02).
