Near-Gem 1904 Proof Quarter Eagle With Cameo Contrast
1904 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo PCGS. This coin was struck just after the no-contrast method of proofing was discontinued in the Mint, and this is the first example we have handled that has been designated as a cameo by one of the major services. The fields show bottomless mirrors that go black when the coin is angled away from the viewer. The devices are nicely frosted and present a considerable degree of contrast against the fields. This is an exceptional piece of proof gold and one of only 55 proofs believed extant today out of the original mintage of 170 pieces. Population: 2 in 64, 4 finer (10/02).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 288U, PCGS# 87930, GSID# 8592)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
