Description
Splendid Choice Cameo 1901 Proof Double Eagle
1901 $20 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Numismatic literature has not wasted too many words on the proof 1901 Double Eagle. For example, Breen (1988) states only that "possibly 36-40 proofs survive, many impaired." David W. Akers (1982) and Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter (1999) are equally stingy, although these authors estimate that only 30-35 coins are extant from an original delivery of 96 specimens. Akers also notes that the 1901 is similar in overall rarity to the 1896 and 1900. This is the first Cameo-designated proof 1901 Twenty that we have handled, and it is also the first Choice example of any finish to appear in one of our auctions since 1996. Fully brought up (as one should expect for proof production methods), the devices contrast nicely with shimmering brilliance in the fields. The original color is a deep, rich, orange-gold shade that appears to go "black" in the fields as the surfaces rotate away from a light source. Both sides are smooth, expertly preserved, and would probably warrant a full Gem designation were it not for a few wispy handling marks on Liberty's cheek. A beautiful coin in all regards.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26EN, PCGS# 89117, GSID# 10111)
