Select Uncirculated 1801 Capped Bust Ten Dollar

1801 $10 MS63 PCGS. B. 2-B, Taraszka-25, R.3.The Wide Date 1801s are the most common variety among all 1795-1804 Eagles, its mintage of 44,344 pieces actually being a combination of Mint production from both 1801 and 1802. This example is particularly nice, even for what is generally a well preserved early gold issue. The frosty, uniformly well struck surfaces are draped in light reddish and olive patina and, for the most part, show only a few wispy abrasions in the fields. A vertical scratch in front of the portrait comes into view with the aid of magnification and an even less obtrusive blemish runs from a trailing curl to star 7. The diagnostic "spines" in Liberty's cap are the result of die clashing. Just a terrific coin for the quality conscious type collector of early gold.
