Description

Rare and Desirable 1879-O Double Eagle

1879-O $20 VF35 PCGS. The only With Motto New Orleans Mint Double Eagle issue, the 1879-O is also the final issue of the denomination from the southern branch mint. After an eighteen year hiatus caused by the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint resumed production in 1879, primarily to strike Silver Dollars. Just 2,325 Double Eagles were struck, only a fraction of which have survived. The present coin has abundant luster for the grade, and the reverse in particular has rich details. Although moderately abraded, there are no contact marks that merit individual notice.
Ex: Early American History Auctions, (6/2001), lot 1466, described with the comment "we cannot imagine a nicer, more appealing VF example than the one offered here."
