Description

Important Rarity, 1854-D Three Dollar Gold, AU58 NGC

1854-D $3 AU58 NGC. The '54-D Three Dollar Gold is a coin of near-legendary reputation. The mintage was a mere 1,120 pieces, and it is the only Three Dollar issue struck at the Dahlonega mint. As such, it is a rare coin that is the subject of ferocious competition among collectors of both the series and the mint. Rarely is the '54-D seen above XF, and a high-end AU coin, such as this one, is the best that most collectors will ever see at auction. This is a totally problem-free example that has no obvious surface blemishes, just light die clashing on each side. Modest wear on the highpoints of the design, and a small number of rather wispy hairlines, in the fields, prevent the piece from receiving a Mint State grade, but the coin's overall attributes are such as to make it worthy of the unofficial "Gem AU" designation. At the present time, only eleven examples of this noteworthy rarity have been graded in Mint State, through the combined efforts of NGC and PCGS, and it seems highly likely that some duplication exists within that number, due to resubmissions. An important offering that is certain to receive serious attention from bidders. (#7970) (Registry values: P5, N18000)
